Their faces covered in black soot, three adults safely rescued after several days in an inactive West Virginia coal mine were mobbed by loved ones in a teary reunion, then they thanked the crews that got them out. The three walked out of an ambulance at a fire hall in Whitesville to the screams of relatives for a brief reunion Wednesday night before being taken to a hospital.

Pentagon took 17 years to catch worker who stole $1.4 million in bogus overtime pay

Department of Defense employee who claimed she worked an average 90 hours per week, 52 weeks a year, for 17 years faces up to 15 years behind bars for taking home more than $1 million in overtime pay. Michelle M. Holt, a civilian secretary at the Air Force who worked at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Va., pleaded guilty this week to computer fraud and theft of government property after she included additional overtime hours in time sheets dating back to 2001 .

Court panel revokes pipeline permit

Quoting a Dr. Seuss character, a panel of 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judges vacated a vital U.S. Forest Service permit developers of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline need to continue work on the 604-mile natural gas transmission line from West Virginia to North Carolina. The matter was returned to the Forest Service for further review.

Court: Testimony from OxyContin maker must be unsealed

A Kentucky appeals court says the secret testimony from a former president of one of the world's largest manufacturers of dangerously addictive opioid painkillers must be released to the public. A three-judge panel ruled Friday the deposition of Richard Sackler must be unsealed, along with about 17 million pages of other documents that were part of Kentucky's complex lawsuit against OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma.

USDA makes funds available for improving rural broadband

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering up to $600 million in loans and grants to help build broadband infrastructure in rural areas - a move U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., are applauding. Telecommunications companies, rural electric cooperatives and utilities, internet service providers and municipalities are all eligible to apply to the USDA's program for funding that would help connect rural areas with insufficient broadband service.
